If you live in the Midwest, you know how difficult is to find fresh seafood at an affordable price. Even more difficult when trying to find a good quality restaurant that focus solely on seafood and that know how to prepare it.
This is one of the reasons that moved Ismara Gonzalez to start Isla del Mar in 2017. The fifth daughter of Dolores and Rafael Gonzales from Jalisco, Mexico, Ismara is not a stranger to working hard or to starting a business. Having previously started two businesses in Omaha, one in vitamin supplements and the other in group fitness and exercising, she finally found her passion in the restaurant industry
Little by little until it grows …
Ismara started Isla del Mar Restaurant with the support from her family, her fiancé, and a friend. The main limitation was the lack of working capital to start the business. A restaurant business required a big investment, which they lacked at the beginning. Later she realized that expanding required a bigger investment.
Finding the resources available …
Her accountant, a client from the Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC), introduced her to MLCDC. Ismara was looking for more capital to expand her business and business classes to help her understand the finances of her business. MLCDC helped her develop a business plan tailored to its industry niche and provided the $50,000 necessary to complete the expansion.
Sustainable Advantage …
“Our goal is to reach people from all ethnicities that enjoy seafood” said Ismara. Our competitive advantage is that we serve fresh seas food. This is something very difficult to find especially in the Midwest.
Developing your community …
Ismara, through Isla del Mar employs seven full-time and thirteen part-time workers on its 20th Street and Vinton location. She plans to grow and open a new location in May 2019 during the Cinco de Mayo celebration. “We are in the process of hiring and training eight full-time and fourteen part-time employees to join our team in the new location” said Ismara. The new restaurant is located on 5101 South 36th St., the same business plaza that Viva Fashion and Planet Fitness are located in.
Her advise for Latino entrepreneurs and people who plans to start a business is to look for help in community development organizations, like Midlands Latino Community Development Corporation (MLCDC), so they can learn more about the financial side of business and how to operate more efficiently.

MLCDC.
