Adventures on the trails activities at L&C Center July 31

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (July 23, 2019) –Kids will learn about the giant American bison and the navigational method known as “dead reckoning” during “Exploration Wednesdays” at 10 and 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31 at the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Admission and materials will be free.
At 10 a.m. during “Campfire Stories,” younger kids will listen to a story about a mouse and an imaginary creature known as a “gruffalo.” Kids will also learn about the American bison (buffalo) which is similar in size to the fictitious gruffalo. Captains Lewis & Clark were amazed by the bison they saw in the Great Plains.
At 11 a.m. during “Junior Explorers,” older kids will learn about a navigational method known as “dead reckoning.” Captain Clark used this method to map the path taken by the expedition. The Captains hoped to uncover a direct water route to the Pacific Ocean.
“The method known as ‘dead reckoning’ requires a good eye,” says Sara Olson, the Center’s Education Coordinator. Afterwards, Junior Explorers will receive a mystery map and will use dead reckoning to find hidden landmarks in the exhibits.
The Corps of Discovery traveled over three thousand miles to reach the Pacific Ocean. Facing adverse conditions, the Captains carefully observed the landscape of the Louisiana Territory. Their maps would be used to define the boundaries of the United States’ recent purchase.
