Nebraska Latino American Commission: El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH Shooting
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by the cowardly acts committed at El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH.
We are tremendously saddened by the tragic attacks on El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH that occurred over the weekend. Although investigations behind the motives of these two shootings are still on going, there are early reports that the attacker in El Paso was motivated by extreme racism. Investigators believe that the attacker was the author of an anti-Immigrant “manifesto” that points to him specifically targeting Hispanics.
This type of hate and persecution has no place in our country.
We cannot stand idly by while Latinos across this county wonder whether they will be the victim of some senseless act of violence, simply because of where they or their parents were born. We must fight against the hate, fight against the lies, and fight against the notion that we are less deserving of the American ideals our mothers and fathers so fervently chased when they left behind the only home they had ever known. America will persevere. However, when we look back at this time in history, our children must know that we did not stand by in silent conformity. Our legacy must be marked by an unmoving opposition to the belief that we, immigrants and children-of-immigrants, are not worthy of the American dream.
We look forward to opening the dialogue about how we can build a stronger, safer, more inclusive Nebraska, for ALL Nebraskans.
