Briar Cliff to host first 1930 Women’s Leadership Summit

(Sioux City – September 6, 2019) Motivated to increase leadership development and empowerment opportunities for women of all ages, Briar Cliff University is hosting its inaugural The 1930 Women’s Leadership Summit on October 25.

The community and area college students are invited to participate and learn from a robust agenda, filled with motivational speakers and activities to inspire personal growth. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the crash of United Airlines Flight 232 in Sioux City and Briar Cliff’s offer of housing and care for families of those impacted by the crash, the speakers will focus on collaboration, community response during a crisis, and key leadership lessons that are critical today.

“We are extremely excited to bring a conference to Siouxland featuring women and their desire to make a difference,” says Rachelle Karstens, Briar Cliff President. “The focus of The 1930 initiative is to engage women in celebrating and experiencing the stories of community, courage and leadership. The name was chosen to honor Briar Cliff’s founding in 1930 by women for women. Ultimately, we plan to build a community of women and supporters of women throughout the country who stand united to support our female students – whether through scholarship, mentorship, or internship opportunities. We believe the possibilities are endless with our strong and generous support network.”

Keynote speaker, Sara Nelson, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO, will be sharing her expertise through her address entitled “Community, Courage & Leadership Lessons Learned in Crisis.” The New York Times refers to Nelson as “the most powerful flight attendant in America.” She is a trailblazer in the world of labor rights, a female change agent in the labor movement, and has served as a leading voice regarding issues facing women in the workplace and across the country.

Breakout speakers from across the U.S. will be sharing their expertise, including Leah Glasgo, President and CEO, UnityPoint Health – Fort Dodge; Treyla Lee, Recruiter, Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption; Annette Hamilton, Chief Operating Officer & Vice President, Ho-Chunk, Inc.; Captain Lisa Claeys, Sioux City Police Department; Mary Sterk, CEO and Founder, Sterk Financial Services; Chiara Cournoyer, Director of Social Services, Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska; Denise Bowyer, Vice President, American Income Life Insurance Company & Secretary, Labor Advisory Board; Lillyan Rodriguez, Catering Sales Manager, Delta Hotels; Julie Tebbe, Inviting & Discerning Minster, Sisters of St. Francis Motherhouse; Mary Brandt, Owner, The Brandt Agency of Interpreting, LLC; and Jane Shey, CEO & President, Shey & Associates.

Summit registration is free for students, $19.30 per person for The 1930 Influencers, and $50 for Non-Influencers.

A donation of $100 will establish an attendee as an Influencer for The 1930. All proceeds support this non-profit initiative.

Universidad de Briar Cliff será anfitriona de la primera Cumbre de Liderazgo de Mujeres de 1930

(Sioux City – 6 de septiembre de 2019) Motivada para aumentar el desarrollo de liderazgo y las oportunidades de empoderamiento para mujeres de todas las edades, la Universidad de Briar Cliff será la anfitriona de su Cumbre inaugural de liderazgo de mujeres de 1930 el 25 de octubre.
