ISU Extension and Outreach lleva a cabo un programa de preparación universitaria para estudiantes latinos de secundaria en Sioux City

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach, junto con las Escuelas Comunitarias de Sioux City, llevará a cabo su quinta serie de talleres Juntos –Juntos para una Mejor Educación a partir del martes 29 de octubre. Juntos es un programa de preparación para la universidad y el éxito de la escuela intermedia y preparatoria para Estudiantes latinos de octavo grado y sus familias. Juntos incluye cinco clases de dos horas para estudiantes y padres que se centran en la preparación de estudiantes de secundaria para la escuela secundaria, así como un título universitario de dos o cuatro años o un certificado de escuela especializada.
El curso Juntos, que se imparte en español, también ayuda a los padres a aprender cómo pueden participar más en la educación de sus hijos y ayudarlos a alcanzar el éxito en la escuela. Enseña a la familia cómo trabajar juntos para lograr objetivos educativos e incorpora actividades divertidas tanto para el alumno como para los padres, creando un sentido de unidad y cooperación dentro de la familia.
El programa Sioux City está dirigido a estudiantes de octavo grado en el sistema de escuelas públicas que hablan español en casa. Los estudiantes deben asistir al programa con un padre, tutor u otro miembro adulto de la familia. Se ofrecerá cuidado infantil gratuito a las familias participantes que también tienen niños pequeños. La cena se ofrece todas las noches de clase, de forma gratuita, y hay estacionamiento en las instalaciones.
Las clases se llevarán a cabo en la Escuela Primaria Irving ubicada en 901 Floyd Blvd. en
Sioux City en las siguientes fechas:

Todas las tardes de Juntos comienzan a las 5:30 p.m. y termina a las 8:00 p.m. y se anima a las familias a asistir a las cinco clases si es posible.

ISU Extension and Outreach Holds College Readiness Program

for Latino Middle Schoolers in Sioux City

Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach, along with Sioux City Community Schools, will hold its fifth Juntos –Together for a Better Education workshop series starting Tuesday, October 29. Juntos is a middle and high school success and college-preparedness program for Latino 8th graders and their families.  Juntos includes five two-hour classes for both students and parents that focus on preparing middle schoolers for high school, as well as a two- or four-year college degree, or specialized trade school certificate.

The Juntos course, given in Spanish, also helps parents learn how they can be more involved in their child’s education and help their child achieve success in school. It teaches the family how to work together for educational goals and incorporates fun activities for both the student and parent, building a sense of unity and cooperation within the family.

The Sioux City program is geared toward 8th grade students in the public school system who speak Spanish at home. Students must attend the program with a parent, guardian or other adult family member. Free childcare will be offered to participating families that also have small children. Dinner is provided each class night, free of charge, and there is parking on the premises. Classes will take place at Irving Elementary School located at 901 Floyd Blvd. in  Sioux City on the following dates:

Tues., Oct. 29 – Making Education a Family Goal

Tues., Nov. 5 – Effective Communication at Home

Tues., Nov. 12 – From Middle School to High School

Tues., Nov. 19 – From High School to Higher Education

Tues., Nov. 26 – Juntos Graduation: Ready to Be a Successful Student

All Juntos evenings start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. and families are encouraged to attend all five classes if possible.
