Sandra Lopes running for Dakota County Commissioner

Sandra Lopes, who has been supporting the Latino community in Siouxland for more than 20 years, announced her candidacy for Dakota County Commissioner.

In an interview with Mundo Latino, she told us that if she is elected, she will be part of a committee responsible for managing the county government. This work involves much more than attending a meeting and voting on some issues. She will be responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens of our community in a fiscally responsible manner.

Over the years Sandra has worked closely with the South Sioux City Chamber of Commerce to continue to provide information about our community and how people can benefit from its programs. She has volunteered for over 20 years at various community events and has become a community ally in difficult times. She has managed to create connections in our diverse community to achieve common goals; she has also supported national movements such as the 2006 immigration protest by organizing a peaceful march in Siouxland, gathering more than 6,000 people.

Her agenda focuses on allocating more funds for the health department to improve its service programs, support programs that focus on the specific needs and circumstances of inmates, rehabilitation programs, and enhancement of existing programs. Sandra strongly believes in supporting agencies that can educate people about their rights.

“Sandra has great problem-solving skills and would be an ideal candidate as her presence there will increase her ability to serve and protect all members of a diverse community by making the commission more responsive by offering equitable services to county residents. She will undoubtedly do an excellent job as Dakota County Commissioner,” said Abril Garcia.

“If elected, I will contribute innovative ideas to the decision making of the County budget, representing the community as a woman and as a minority,” she concluded.

Please remember that the elections are this Tuesday, November 3.
